Increased variability in Greenland Ice Sheet runoff from satellite observations

As the vast majority of the scientific community agrees, climate change is a real threat to our way of life. We see hotter temperatures, more severe storms, increased droughts, poverty and displacement, food shortages, and rising ocean levels. These issues will only be exacerbated by further inaction. For those living near the coast at near sea level altitudes, rising sea levels are a huge threat to the current way of life. A major contributor to the rise of sea level is melting ice at the poles, in glaciers, and in ice sheets.

Recently a group of researchers used satellite altimetry to measure how much ice runoff was flowing from ice sheets in Greenland. The researchers found that between 2011 and 2021 ice sheet surface elevation in the low altitude zone of Greenland’s glaciers decreased on average by 1.4 ± .4m each summer and increased .9 ± .4m each winter. This leads to roughly 357 ± 58Gt of ice runoff per year.

  1. Hi Alan!
I found your post to be very relevant to today's issues. It's sad to see the earth crumbing under our feet and it's basically all our faults. Hopefully this issue is at least slowed to give researchers and scientists some time to try to create an effective plan to help the planet survive.

    1. Yeah it's an awful shame that much of our ice caps is melting and that many of these ecosystems are being impacted. Rising sea levels can also impact ecosystems worldwide.

  2. Hi Alan,
Global warming is definitely an ongoing and worsening issue. A lot of major cities are seaside so its only a matter of time before global warming starts to affect us more directly. I hope that large contributors to global warming will soon cooperate with the suggestions of scientists to slow down, and even possibly reverse all the damage done to the earth.

    1. Hopefully we can get our act together and cut emissions before it's too late (if it isn't already too late now). The sooner the better to save our planet and avoid catastrophe.

  4. Hey Alan!
I thought this was informative and brought attention to this scary reality. What affect do you think rising sea levels will have on a coastal state like Massachusetts?

    1. I live right near the coast less than 100 feet above sea level. If the sea were to rise only half a meter or so by 2050, coastlines could be drastically different and ecosystems couldv be erased. Along with tides and extreme weather events, destruction to coastal infrastructure could be disastrous.

  5. Hi Alan, I live in a coastal town and Im always telling my parents to sell because were going to go under water fairly shortly. Anyways great job on your blog post its sad and scary to think of all the things that could happen due to climate change.

  6. Hi Alan, great post and is very relevant to our lives today. Since Greenland is near us and with the ice sheets melting, what do you think will happen to the neighboring countries around it when the oceans start to rise even more

  7. Hi Alan. This post was really interesting to read because of the detrimental state of our climate. And climate change isn't just a threat to us but the whole ecosystem! That's why this is such a concerning issue.
