An interesting discovery has been made by the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in California. They have been using a common yellow dye called Thioflavin T or ThT as a treatment for worms that bred to show similar symptoms of a person with Alzheimer's. This dye not only slowed down the progression of the Alzheimer's in the worms, it also extended the lifespan of healthy worms by 50%.
Gordon Lithgow the director of this study wants to use other compounds to stabilize protein homeostasis. Protein homeostasis is the ability of an organism to keep the balance of proteins. The ThT binds the amyloid protein fragments which are associated with Alzheimer's disease. The ThT works in slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease in the worms by decreasing the speed of the clumping of the amyloid protein fragments. In addition to these findings Lithgow has said that the ThT could potentially if studies continue to be successful, prolong the lifespan of healthy humans as well.
Silvestre Alavez another scientist working on the Lithgow research team has also discovered that curcumin an ingredient in the spice tumeric also has similar health benefits of the ThT.
The discoveries made by the Lithgow research lab are major in the study of aging. This study will continue on more complex animals such as mice.

I had no idea that worms were even able to get Alzheimer's, and scientists could see the effects of Alzheimer's in worms. But it's amazing that they were able to slow down its progression and extend their lifespan using something like a dye. I'm curious as to how they injected the dye into the worms and what organ, if it is an organ, they were going for.

It's interesting to know that worms can develop Alzheimer's as human do. Though, I never knew its good to see some progression in treating this disease in worms with a dye. Hopefully, they can come up with such treatment for humans as well.

Actually as far as I know the worms used can't get alzheimer's naturally. These worms were bred to show Alzheimers like symptoms and then were treated with the yellow dye.
ReplyDeleteDavid - Based on the article it doesn't appear that there is a specific organ they were targeting. The dye is used in labs to identify the damaged protein fragments found in Alzheimer's. This dye must somehow work to repair the damage in those particular cells.
Arpita- Alzheimer's a horrible disease and is damaging to both those suffering with it and the loved ones of those people. I too hope this continues and will help those affected with this.
Cleopatra- We this study is in a very preliminary stage so obviously they won't jump right ahead and test on humans. They will be continuing the study to work with mice which are more complex animals and maybe if things go well they will do further testing on other types of animals.

Many trends of different diseases in some animals do match with humans. I think it is very interesting that worm shows progress in Alzheimer's. It is also possible that scientists will discover some king of drug with relates to the stabilize the process of protein homeostasis. So, the lifespan of patients with Alzheimer's can be extended.

It sounds to me like this yellow dye was sucked straight from the fountain of youth! Extending one's lifespan has been of huge concern with us humans, so I am sure ThT will get a go at humans if all goes well in the research. Treating Alzheimer's disease is also very important to me, and I am curious as to whether this dye has been increasing the life expectancy of the worms with Alzheimer's by 50% or just the healthy worms.
