The Medical Benefits of Caffeinated Coffee

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed drinks in the world, though in spite of its popularity—or perhaps because of it—the beverage has been cast into a dark perspective by some on the fringes of the health community. Whether we talk to friends or family, it is not completely uncommon to run across stories of alleged, small maladies caused by coffee: from kidney stones to heart disease to cancer, it seems that--for some odd reason--coffee has left a bad taste in the mouths of many disgruntled citizens. I am pleased to tell them that they have all been grossly misinformed.

A recent study by Gavrieli et al. in the Journal of Nutrition demonstrated that caffeinated coffee intake is directly correlated to weight loss, with habitual coffee drinkers consuming 21.7% less food than those using a decaf placebo. On a wider chemical front, cortisol—the molecule involved in bone-marrow production—concentration falls less in men drinking coffee than those who are not. This study compliments a separate longitudinal study currently underway to investigate why habitual, coffee drinking men are less likely to develop prostate cancer. A myraid of other studies have found zero correlation between coffee drinking and heart disease, kidney stones, cancer or other diseases allegedly resulting from coffee consumption. That said, coffee plays a much larger role in public health than most of us tend to think.


Six years prior to Gavreili's article, a major review of longitudinal and cross-sectional studies in world-wide, habitual coffee consumption from JAMA made a fascinating discovery: regular coffee drinkers who consume 6 to 7 coffee cups per day have a 28% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, while those who drank 7 or more cups lowered their risk by a staggering 35%. These findings should not be taken lightly. According to the World Health Organization (WHO,) over 90% of the 220 million people diagnosed with diabetes are type 2. Sadly, 80% of the net diabetes mortality rate is from lower-income and developing countries without access to basic medical infrastructure. Most disturbing; however, is the projected mortality rate, which is expected to increase by 200% over the next 20 years. If something as prevalent, innocuous and inexpensive as coffee can decrease the risk by 35%, those involved in health policy and diabetes research should be examining effects of coffee very, very closely.


While the positive effects of coffee are well known—and the quackery surrounding the negatives dismissed—many researchers are still in the dark as to the actual mechanisms by which coffee benefits our health. Proposed candidate mechanisms abound, to include chlorogenic-acid induced pathways, which may reduce glucose output via inhibition of glucose-6-phosphate; Glucagen peptide-1 pathways; protein-3 induction; effects of magnesium in coffee and many, many more. Labs, hospitals and health organizations will likely spend years learning more about the mechanisms and long term benefits of the world's most popular beverage. Either way, it's nice to know that, at the very least, the average cup of coffee does a lot more than just wake us up in the morning.

I guess I will not be getting diabetes and will actually be losing weight! haha. even though i know some big coffee drinkers who are overweight and I would not be surprised if they were the only ones that were. something we need to keep in mind also is the amount of sugar one puts n the coffee. unless that is they can prove that the caffeine alone can be effective in weight loss even if sugar is added.

  2. I'm definitely going to try and get into the habit of drinking coffee more often than I do. I don't really care about the weight loss aspect of coffee but, with a history of prostate problems in my family, I would definitely like to decrease my chances of getting prostate cancer. It seems as if diabetes is becoming more prevalent in today's world and it really concerns me that studies indicate that the mortality rate will only increase.

  3. It makes sense that people who consume caffeinated coffee eat less. We eat food to get energy and caffeine can increase energy and so people with caffeine in their system wouldn't feel the need to eat as often.

    I'm wondering if these benefits are due to the coffee and caffeine or just from the caffeine. Can these affects be brought on by other caffeinated beverages such as tea?

    A drink that will make me lose wait AND prevent a possible future diagnosis of prostate cancer? Sign me up! But on the topic of your theory of supplying third world countries with coffee so as to prevent all their deaths from diabetes, well...like communism, it may seem like a good idea on paper, but...these people are dying for reasons other than lack of coffee, let us be honest here. What the U.S. should be doing is taking some of the billions of dollars spent on our war efforts and buying these countries some actual food. Starvation can cause diabetes, and coffee alone is most certainly not going to cure starvation. I personally consume so much caffeine I get headaches without it. Too much caffeine also causes insomnia/restlessness, nervousness, upset stomach, irritability, muscle tremors and fast heartbeat. Everything has its pros and cons, and with coffee, we are finally discovering some of its pros. This is only normal. And I mean, yeah, it is interesting to think about these positive effects.

  5. With no chemical connection between caffiene and these health benefits, I am skeptical with whether this is a trend due to the type of people that drink 6 to 7 cups of coffee a day. When I think of someone drinking this much coffee, I think of a busy buisness person or someone with a very busy day in general. Perhaps being active in this way in connected with these health benefits.

  6. This was one of the most enlightening articles I've read in this blog! I am an avid coffee drinker and I have always had my concerns, but now I am glad to say my addiction is not a bad one, but rather is supporting a healthy lifestyle! I am particularly interested in the fact that coffee may play a preventive role in type 2 diabetes while it also encourages weight loss. Maybe one day in addition to diet and exercise, doctors will start recommending a daily cup of coffee to those struggling to weight loss, a fantastic treatment option, in my opinion.

  8. I certainly don't doubt that coffee has numerous beneficial effects on our health. Then again, nor do I doubt that morphine, amphetamines, ibuprofen, and red wine can have numerous benefits for our health. Coffee, it seems to me, tends to get a little more criticism than it should, mostly because it is perceived as an unnatural source of productivity and, vicariously, an engine of mindless consumerism. That being said, I have seen numerous, non-correlational studies highlighting the negative effects coffee can have on GI tract function, as well as ones showing the worrisome number of carcinogens coffee can have.

    I'll definitely consider the information in this post when making judgments about coffee, but it doesn't refute research on the many detrimental effects that coffee can have on people.

    Sugar and cream are certainly factors to keep in mind, and, incidentally, form the major confounding variables in most of the studies within the JAMA review article. That being said, the percentages are based off very comprehensive research and are beyond the margin of error. Coffee—as with all beverages—should be taken in reasonable amounts and with sensible portions of sugar or cream additives. I hope that in writing this I didn't give the impression that drinking coffee gave someone the excuse to use prodigious amounts of sugar—especially so if they are at risk for diabetes.

    I'm always happy to hear about people making good decisions about their health. Concerning the prostate study, there is an inverse relationship between coffee and prostate issues, though we still don't know whether it is a result of more coffee or more liquids in general. As pointed out by another student, there is some possibility that coffee drinking is positively correlated to a more active lifestyle, which may mean that, with regards to prostate cancer, there are some serious, potential confounding variables to keep in mind. The issue of diabetes; however, is a little more clear-cut.

    That's an excellent question. I wish I could give a more thorough response, but there is no data I could find within the two articles that answer this question directly. Tea is also widely consumed; and, in many cultures, is also associated with certain benefits—no official literature on tea would be surprising. However, I am confident that PubMed or JAMA or Nature will yield some results worth looking into.

  13. Even there are so many health benefits of coffee, but drinking in large amounts of it will trigger another disease. Coffee is not recommended for a pregnant woman to consume coffee as it can cause miscarriage.
