Health problems are a
widely discussed and debated topic in the science and health community. Over
the course of the last few decades, a variety of diseases have been rising
steadily around the world. Scientists want to find the cause for diseases that
are becoming more common, such as coronary disease, as well as prevention and
possible cures. Despite trying their best to find the answers, scientists and
health professionals, as well as individuals seeking answers for their own personal
benefit, are plagued with the fake news circulating the internet and journals.
These fake news articles, journals, and websites claim to know causes and cures
for many diseases which are not scientifically proven.
An
infamous source of science-based health news comes from Natural News. According
to their article “It’s not that heart disease and obesity runs in your family,
it’s that nobody in your family runs”, the author claims that a variety of
health problems are not inherited by family ties but instead are a direct
result of conscious choices for individual well being. The article proceeds to
talk about how being overweight leads to heart problems, and if Americans want
to eliminating their ‘non-inherited “condition”’, they need to exercise and make
smart food choices. The article reluctantly does admit that there are people
who inherit nutrient deficiencies, but that the magnitude of the problem does
not correlate with the heart disease cases arising in the public.
However, heart diseases and similar diseases are not
purely dietary based. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
heart disease and high blood pressure can be caused by a variety of factors.
Age, sex, race, health, and genetic factors all contribute to the probability of
developing heart disease. It is important to note that smoking and an unhealthy
diet can increase the risk for disease, but not to the degree Natural News is
claiming that it does. The risk factors for coronary disease seems to correlate
with many other diseases because age does have a significant impact on disease
development. Acknowledging that it is not the ‘American obesity culture’ that
solely leads to an abundance of coronary diseases is important for the community
to understand and accept.

I think when it comes to healthy lifestyles and bettering oneself people are quick to advocate the lifestyle without having an in depth knowledge on what they alone are advocating for. As you said, research is still being done to try to figure out the causes as well as preventions and treatments. In this society, social media plays a large role in this false advocation. People are quick to see an image of a healthy lifestyle that prevents whatever disease and they believe what they are seeing even though these sources are usually not reliable and have little to no science backing. People don't have enough knowledge on the subject but also I think most are very anxious to have the answers which science just doesn't have yet; yes, they have probable risk factors associated with these diseases but there's still so much ongoing research and definite questions may not be made available for a number of years to come.

Click bait for health tips and advice are common on many popular sites such as facebook. This click bait is based around false assumptions and lack of evidence to appeal to the common misconceptions in the average individual's mind. Hopefully new research into disease development and cause, as well as treatment, will be able to debunk these false claims illustrated by certain click bait.

I think that there are many people out there that blame people who come down with these diseases for being overweight or not living their healthiest lives that they could have. Many people don't understand that most of these diseases are hereditary and they have nothing to do with lifestyle choice. Of course lifestyle choices impact your life and could help increase your immunity and metabolism but they are not the main driver behind the diseases one encounters in his or her life. There should be more educational papers out there about medicine and diseases so these mistakes don't continue to be made.

I agree; health style choices do not definitively define whether you develop a disease or not. Ultimately, it is based off of the genetics passed down in the person's family tree. I do concur that life choices can impact the rate of how diseases develop but they are definitely not the main or only cause.

I feel like these people are just making it worst for those with these diseases, because they are giving out false or incorrect information that can mislead those who are actually sick. Misleading information can have serious impacts because some people who do not have the illnesses may believe in what they read and they will just go on with their lives "running" only to stay healthy, but at the end of the day, they can still possibly become sick because there are heredity illnesses. People should focus more on writing things that are useful to influence people in a positive way when it comes to the health field.

That is true; this is misleading the public into believing that diseases are completely based on the choices that a person makes. This might also lead to people assuming that since it is based off of their choices, they don't need to check for any history of diseases (not just heart related) in their family.
