There are statistics that show vaccines largely eliminate diseases where they are used. Severe side effects to vaccines are very rare, much less so than the fatalities caused by the prevented disease. The net impact on the world is by far a positive one. This is not mentioned of course. The side effects are of course mentioned. The Kaiser Health News report is cited as proof of the claim that vaccines spread disease. This report which is given by a reputable .org website is an instance where a disease outbreak spread among a largely vaccinated populace. However, when drawing a conclusion about truth, many samples are necessary. There are vastly more instances outbreaks in unvaccinated populations. And just because there was an outbreak of disease where there were vaccinations, doesn’t mean there is a connection between those two things. As I get older, so do you, therefore you get older because I am getting older. That doesn’t make any sense and neither does this lie. By ignoring the other side of the data, that allowed them to more sneakily assume a false conclusion. They end the article, not stating that vaccines make people carriers of the disease, a claim made near the beginning, but just saying that vaccines don’t work because some guy who got the vaccine and got mumps later. Also, to be a carrier of a disease means that it is heritable and is present in a mutated allele. Vaccines do not change our DNA in any way so a basic understanding of biology shuts this down as well. They’re trying to hit two birds with one stone here. Too bad their rocks are imaginary. All you have to do is look and you won't see them.

As I have mentioned on a previous blog posting, the news outlet Natural News publishes a vast amount of pseudoscience and conspiratorial articles aimed to cast pharmaceutical medicine in a bad light. The owner and editor of natural news is Mike Adams. I did some research on Mike Adams and have come to a couple of possible conclusions as to his motivations for site, one of which I prefer. He could be tapping into the alternative market for money since he advertises lots of products on his site. And perhaps money lust has shaped his site in negative way but I don't see it as the inspiration behind it. Perhaps it is a political objective, but the crazy alternative ideas are beyond even republican comprehension, like an article saying lots of blueberry products actually do not contain blueberries. It could be because he is a crazy person, but he is way too successful to be so illogical in other ways in his life. After doing research into his past it seems he was affected in a negative way by modern medicine. After getting diabetes, he did his own exploring into the health benefits of food, a topic he says was controversial to science at that time. Nevertheless he stuck to his gumption believing that there is no way a calorie is just a calorie and it does not matter where it comes from. He started eating more vegetables and less processed sugars and foods, lost a lot of weight, and got a lot healthier. As crazy as it sounds, I think his motivation behind natural news is to keep people questioning science. Through developing a website that embodies the very qualities of science he despises, Mike Adams hopes to give people alternatives to modern scientific beliefs in case science is wrong. If any crazy alternative thing therefore wants to advertise on his site, he's probably like, "Yes I'll take the money I mean it will get people to question science right?" and doesn't think any more about it in the context of his conscience. Modern medicine, however, isn't wrong about everything, and by lies about science and alternatives without proof of function, he's actually hurting people. An example of this is the lies he spreads about vaccines. At least one thing makes sense: it is hard to understand this illogical man. Perhaps he doesn't realize how much harm he is causing because the revenue has a positive influence on his life, and he is a religious man who doesn't want to think too deeply about his blessings. Perhaps he believes he is doing good by promoting a mentality susceptible to faith. I think the original intent, to question science, was a good one, but I think, but to do so under false pretense undermines critical thinking, the true solution, and therefore himself. I think, however, the result of his craziness website could enhance and foster logical tendencies through these obvious fallacies, and blatant hypocrisies. Thus Mike Adams' deeper purpose in life was achieved by accident. Probably though he is just a crazy person who brainwashed himself.

It is very sad that there are still many websites like this posting fake news and trying to distract people from learning real science. Many of them actually lack appropriate data or resources to support their ideas (of course they lack). I think it will be better if schools and communities can teach people some general ways to distinguish fake stories from real science. For example, fake stories do not have useful data or other resources, and people should not trust articles that lack this kind of useful information.

You can find one example of anything. One example also isn't proof of anything. This is just spreading lies, saying that one example of vaccine outcomes is the truth. It ignores countless studies and evidence that has become the mainstream in support of vaccines. The significant, significant majority of studies say that vaccines work and are extremely effective at warding off deadly diseases, especially when herd immunity happens.

Its not surprising to see natural news pushing an anti-vaccine agenda. The idea that something else can help cure disease rather than god himself is a direct contradiction to their belief. The part is true about vaccines is that they do implant disease into the recipient but the disease is rendered docile in the lab and allows for the immune system to familiarize with the injected disease. The vaccine provides a documented response for the immune system to react when a serious case for the said disease and gives the host a chance to be able to fight it off before contracting it fully. Vaccines are a preventative measure and do not cause more disease than it helps protect against.

The hypocrisy of these people are amazing. Believing in facts and results of experiments in the past to help predict the future, such as a vaccine will prevent a disease and we have evidence to support that, is something these people certainly do not ignore in every facet of their lives. Any time these people followed a set of instructions to consistently achieve an expected result, perhaps even in their own spirituality, should in itself fulfill for them the hypothesis of the vaccine.
ReplyDeleteThis is an instance in which the statistical adage, correlation does not imply causation can be applied. Just because some people who were vaccinated were also afflicted by some type of ailment does not mean it was caused by the vaccine. If they really want to prove this, they should do t-tests and show us the significance level. But they can't even use credible sources to back their claims so I doubt they can perform simple statistical tests.
