Biodiversity in Hawaii

The islands of Hawaii emerged from the ocean over a period of 6 million years. The formation began with Kauai 6 million years ago, with the Big Island (1.3 million years ago) currently the only island still growing. As each new island was formed, it was colonized by plants and animals from the older islands and as they spread out to fill each island’s ecological niches, a wealth of new species emerged.

Previously, DNA analysis led some biologists to concluded that the evolutionary diversification in Hawaii has yet to reach its peak. However, new analysis found that biodiversity on the islands peaked millions of years ago. Stress on island flora and fauna began several million years ago due to shrinking land areas of the older islands. With the exception of the Big Island, all of the islands of Hawaii experiences a decrease in species diversity.

Figuring out the evolutionary trajectory of life on the islands isn’t as straightforward as it is on land that has been established for billions of years. Without a fossil record, it is difficult to conclude whether diversity is increasing or decreasing. While past studies claimed that evolutionary diversity has yet to peak, a new study by researches at UC Berkeley shows otherwise. This conclusion was made following recent studies and their previous work which suggested that the only way to explain why some mammal groups in the past declined over millions of years was that the carrying capacity of the ecosystem crashed.

  1. Vey interesting post Haley! There was a lot of new information in here that I didn’t know before. I think it’s really fascinating that an island can grow as you stated in the beginning of your post. I wonder how long this process takes. Although it is sad that the islands of Hawaii have reached their biodiversity peak so long ago, I thought that this was an interesting topic of research. I want to learn more about how researchers go into an area of land and find out the entire ecosystem composition and then compare it over time. It sounds very time-consuming, but also very rewarding!

    1. I'm so exited to share my testimonies about the Good Work of Dr. Emmanuel who cured my Herpes virus with his herbs, I never thought that I will live on earth before the year runs out. I have been suffering from a deadly Herpes virus (HVS) for the past (4)years now; I had spent a lot of money going from one Hospital to another looking for way to get rid of this disease, the hospital have been my home everyday residence. Constant checks up have been my hobby not until this faithful day, I was searching
through the internet, I saw a testimony on how Dr.Emmanuel helped someone in curing his Herpes virus using his healing
Herbs, quickly I copied his email just to give him a test I spoke to him, he asked me to a preparation for the herbs items, of which I did exactly what he instructed me to do, he told me that he is going to provide the herbal cure to me, which he
did, few days after i went back to the same hospital that previously confirmed me as Herpes virus positive and this time the result declared me negative to the deadly virus of Herpes virus....so I decided to share my testimony, that nothing is impossible with God, God use a man to healed me. No matter what you are passing through, no matter how deadly the sickness is and no matter what the situation is God that did mine is still going to do yours, suffering from AIDS, ALS,hiv/aids,copd, asthma.. Cancer, any kind of disease, you can rich him now via ? Gmail address: ( nativehealthclinic@gmail.com) or WhatsApp number +2348140073965

  2. I would totally believe that biodiversity in Hawaii is decreasing because over time I think the islands have become overwhelmed by tourists and taken over by resorts and destroyed by humans to become vacation spots. I think that as the years go by there could be a decline in the number of species that the islands of Hawaii have. It's pretty sad that this is the case because like you wrote in your post, there were once a wealth of new species that emerged from the islands. I think scientists researching the biodiversity of the islands would be beneficial, although expensive and time consuming, because it can be a step towards preserving what is left of plant and animal life on the islands.

    1. I agree that now, the biggest threat to biodiversity is due to human disturbance. What I thought was really interesting about the article is that they found that island biodiversity peaked long before human settlement, possibly due to having reached their carrying capacity or due to stress on animal or plant inhabitants from land loss. Researching biodiversity of the islands is definitely worth it, in my eyes, because like you said, it's a step towards preserving what is left. The hard part is that conservationists now have to account for human disturbance plus the natural decline in biodiversity ever since the islands stopping growing.

    2. Natural herbs have cured so many illness that drugs and injection can't
cure. I've seen the great importance of natural herbs and the wonderful
work natural herbs have done in people's lives. i read a lot of people's
testimonies online on how they were cured of Herpes, HIV, Diabetics,
Lymphoma, Fibroid, Cancer etc by Dr. VOODOO herbal medicine, so i decided
to contact the doctor because i know nature has the power to heal anything.
I was diagnosed with HIV for the past 7 years but Dr. VOODOO cured me with
his herbs and i referred my aunt and her husband to him immediately because
they were both suffering from herpes but to God be the glory, they were
cured too .I know is hard to believe but am a living testimony. There is no
harm trying herbs. He is also a spell caster, he cast spell to restore
broken marriages and he cast good luck spells to prosper and excel in life.

  3. Island biodiversity is a great topic to read about. It's so interesting that such small secluded spaces can host so many different species. It is disappointing that Hawaii's biodiversity has reached its peak but it's also kind of hard to believe because there are still so many plant and animal species on the islands.

  4. This was an interesting topic! I know that Hawaii is the healthiest state in the country, so maybe that also has some correlation to animal diversity? I mean, they're both occupying the land! But I also agree with what Ana said, on how there may be a decline because of tourists and resorts.

  5. I did not know how relatively young the islands of Hawaii were before reading this. It must be tough to calculate biodiversity without a solid fossil record. It makes sense that the peak biodiversity on the islands has already occurred. In this day in age, I can image how it can only continue to decrease. As mentioned above, I’m sure tourism has taken a major toll on the plants and animals found on Hawaii. But climate change also comes to mind. Being a remote island chain, Hawaii is extremely susceptible to experiencing the effect of sea level rise. I find it hard to believe that the Big Island is still in the process of growing. Sea level rise has been occurring and will probably rapidly increase, most likely even further decreasing the biodiversity on Hawaii.

  6. Honestly domestic cats are horrendously devastating to island biodiversity, especially with respect to birds. In Hawaii, the various honeycreeper species have been moved to an endangered status due to overhunting by cats. This isn't a trend that's exclusive to Hawaii either. In New Zealand, the kakapo was nearly driven to extinction by roaming cats. So here's a PSA: keep your cats indoors; the birds that they kill are far more valuable to the ecosystem than your cat's entertainment.

    1. Domestic cats are definitely a danger to island biodiversity. But what I thought was interesting was that the article talked about how island biodiversity reached it peak even before human influence. I think the "problem" here is that the islands are no longer growing (with the exception of the Big Island) so the stress of shrinking land area or that the islands have reached their carrying capacity.

  7. This was a really interesting post! I didn't realize how young the Hawaiian Islands were or that all of them except Big Island are shrinking. I am kind of surprised that some scientists believe that evolutionary diversification on the Hawaiian Islands has yet to reach its peak. I would think that with all of the human impacts, such as those related to tourism and global warming, the evolutionary diversification would be declining.

  8. What a feeling of joy!
A living dog is better than a dead lion, good health is taken not given. no one can help you until you help yourself. what could be the relevance of money when the engine that made it is faulty? I use to put my money before my health but I've learn my lesson. The human body is a machine that will break down if not taken good care of.
I was infected with HSV-1 & 2. I suffered all it mean to be a carrier of the virus but i did not relent in a quest for cure even when i lost money to those faking to be healers and doctors until i met my God in a form of a man. he told me all i needed to know abvirus and he collected money from me and say to me "nothing is free even in free town,' which i totally concur to. he gave me the email of a man. that email i will freely give to you that is privilege to read this essay. I wrote to the man through the email explaining everything to him. i was so happy that he responded and he told me what to do, i did all he instructed me without having pity on my finance because i was so eager to get out of the shameful situation. And he never let me down. he cured me and made me feel joy and comfort that i never feel for a long long time.
Firstly, my gratitude goes to God almighty for his mercy and protections and also for leading my part AND to Gabriel who gave me the email. ALSO to Dr Osewe who cured me, lastly to you who took time to read this to the end. here is the email: oseweagbonifo@gmail.com. It's a gift.. use it or give to anyone you think will be in need of it. Thanks

tests was done on me, later on I was told I had Herpes. My doctor told me
that there's no cure for Herpes I felt bad, I went online searching for a
possible cure for Herpes Virus, I saw a post of Dr. ogogo a herbal doctor
that's helping people get cured from HERPES, HIV, HEPATITIS B, CANCER e.t.c. I
contacted him and told him how I'm feeling he said his herbal medicine can
cure me. He sent me the medicine via Dhl delivery service and I received
the medicine some days after he sent it, i took the medicine as prescribed
by him. Before the completion of the medication the symptoms stopped. I
went to the doctor and carried out another blood test, surprisingly I was
Negative. I haven't had any symptoms anymore. Dr. ogogo is great and you can

  13. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
