Conservation Success

Conservation Success

It is difficult to be unaware of the fact that the Earth is going through a mass extinction because of human activity. There are currently over 41,000 species listed as endangered and a fourth of these are threatened with extinction. Many of these species will go extinct despite the efforts of conservationists. Despite this large number of threatened species there are some success stories.
March 3rd was World Wildlife Day and the WWF wrote an article sharing good news of conservation efforts from the past year. One huge accomplishment is pandas are not longer listed as endangered after 30 years of effort. They were first listed endangered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service in 1984. Wild tigers also showed an increase in numbers, which hasn’t happened before. The ivory trade market in China will be closing by the end of this year, hopefully helping with poaching of elephants. There has been an effort to save world heritage sites, basically referring to what is left of the natural world. This will help to preserve places all over the world that are home to thousands of different species.
It is hard to stay hopeful when the world is losing so many different species, but these stories help to show that the efforts made to save endangered species are not totally pointless.

  1. It's amazing to see how successful we've recently become in conserving our wildlife species and nature. What people need to keep in mind is that not only animals are becoming endangered over the recent years, but plant species as well. All biodiversity in life should be preserved for the next generations to come. Just because plants aren't moving species or animals we can see at the zoo, we should still try to conserve their nature as much as possible!

    1. I totally agree! Plants are a very important part of nature and they are often overlooked because of their lack of faces. I think it is very important for conservation efforts to be increased overall, but especially towards plants.

  2. It really is scary to hear that 41,000 species are endangered, and a fourth of those are going to be extinct. These animals are so important to our ecosystems and it will effect so many things if that many species reach extinction. It makes me happy that organizations are making a difference and helping to prevent some of these species from going extinct. It is great news to hear that the ivory trade market is closing, as it has had such a negative effect on the elephant populations. Hopefully we can continue to prevent these species from going extinct the same way we've helped pandas.

  3. This honestly brings me a little hope for the future of life on Earth. Although recently times may be rough in terms of environmental protections due to the United States current administration, I'm sure that the efforts made by WWF and other organizations will help. Hopefully the streak of good news will continue as the years go on.

  4. This is a nice silver lining. I heard on the radio the other day that China is barring ivory trade, which is superficially good, BUT, based on simple supply and demand, I can see it multiplying the value of black market ivory by a large factor. This could of course, in turn, make things much harder for wild elephants via increased poaching. It's frustrating that so many laws get passed that seem to totally overlook their potential negative consequences. People cringe at the idea, but the best way to end poaching would be to flood the market. If elephants or tigers or what have you were bred in captivity, the parts could be sold as needed. It sounds sick to think like that since we hold these creatures to such a majestic status, but if we do actually care about them, this might be the best route.

    1. I see your point about breeding animals in captivity just for their desired parts, but there are many flaws behind that plan. It's one thing to breed animals in captivity in order to help bring up population numbers, but its another to kill them off after doing so just for what we want from them.

  5. It's so sad to think how these animals are being killed as a result of human influence. We take so much away from animal habitats and what they can provide that one day we won't have them anymore. I'm really happy to hear that some of these animals are no longer listed as endangered. However, I hope it continues this way and that these animals are protected by more laws.

  6. There has always been talk about a 6th extinction. Sometimes it may be difficult to truly understand the seriousness of losing so many species of animals. This post definitely will give people a sense of hope but there is much more work that needs to be done to protect wildlife.
