Artificial Intelligence: Does it have the potential to become alive?

https://www.geekwire.com/2018/ethics-ai-robots-will-rise-will-rule-us/

When we think of a robot, what comes to mind are machines that are designed by computer programmers to perform certain tasks beneficial to humans. Sophisticated robots are able to do this due to Artificial Intelligence technology. AI is the intelligence of computer systems to perform functions that normally require natural human intelligence. Examples of these functions include visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, as well as translation between languages. AI machines are entrusted to control processes that usually would be governed by humans. But what if Artificial Intelligence could become conscious? What if it could act as its own being without being programmed to do so?
According to a few neuroscientists, Artificial Intelligence may become alive if it's constructed to do so. They hypothesize that once these machines are designed to observe the biological principle of homeostasis, they will gain awareness of their internal state, which would result in the robotic version of feelings and a will for survival. Since homeostasis states how life must regulate itself to remain within a narrow range of suitable conditions, if a robot is built with the ability to sense peril to its own existence, then it will develop feelings to guide survival behaviors.
With this kind of advancement in Artificial Intelligence, a machine may be able to make decisions that differ from what they might be programmed to do. In addition, the robot would be “alive” because it would have a sense of consciousness. I think that this kind of scientific advancement would be very dangerous to society since it gives intelligent machines the ability to make decisions based on their own personal needs. Would you want to live in a world where robots acted as living beings?

  1. In this post, you mention that scientists only hypothesize that we can create a robot that is sentient. Why is this? What is preventing us from creating conscious and self reliant AI? Are ethical issues preventing us from creating a sentient robot or is our technology not sophisticated to be able to attempt such an endeavor.

    1. I believe that scientists are wary of this type of AI technology due to both of the ideas you mentioned. Ethical issues arise from robots being "alive" since there are some that believe this kind of technology isn't normal. In addition, scientists must not have advanced enough technology yet to create such a thing since they are only hypothesizing about this idea.

  2. The thought of robots acting as real living beings is actually scary. i remember when that female robot became popular on social media and most of the posts were about her turning against humans. i do believe that there is more than having a sense of consciousness that makes you a living being. I wonder if is there is a lot of controversy with this project and the fact that they can be programmed to be "living beings"

  3. I find this topic really interesting. I always see videos online from Boston Dynamics that show robots performing all these human-like behaviors. I do think that in years to come, robots will be able to fully function on their own and honestly that's a scary thought. I only think it could be beneficial for like military purposes but this could also mean that the enemies may have them as well. Do you see any ways they could be beneficial? Or should this just not be something we mess with?

    1. I believe this kind of technology should not be messed with. What comes to my mind are the countless movies of robots taking over if they had the ability to make their own conscious decisions. Robots probably wouldn't want to be controlled by computer systems if they are able to think and respond to stimulus.
