Benefits of Yogurts

Besides the obvious health benefits of consuming yogurt such as calcium intake and aiding digestion, studies have found links between them and gut health. Yogurts are known to be a great source of calcium and vitamin D, which is essential for promoting and maintaining bone health. In addition, yogurts contain a type of bacteria called probiotics. Probiotics are present in a variety of foods, mostly in fermented dairy products. They are beneficial as they can help with certain gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea, constipation, and other inflammatory bowel diseases

In a recent study, scientists looked further into the connection between the probiotics in yogurt and their benefits on the gut health. Researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine suggested that probiotics could help improve mental health, specifically, for depression. They tested their hypothesis by feeding lab mice Lactobacillus. Lactobacillus bulgaricus is one of the two most common probiotic bacterial cultures used to make yogurts in addition to Streptococcus thermophilus. The results of their study revealed a unique mechanism of how Lactobacillus indirectly affects our mood. They have found that as the amount of Lactobacillus gets taken up and diminishes in the gut, the level of kynurenine, a metabolite present in blood, increases. Thus, the overall mechanism leads to the symptoms of depression to set in. The study shows that there is an indirect link between the effects of consuming probiotics, in particular, Lactobacillus, and our mood. Moreover, this study provides a direct link between the health of our gut microbiome and mental health.

This study reveals relatively new information and findings, therefore, this topic regarding the correlation between the benefit of probiotics in our diet and our mental health is still being heavily researched. The researchers from this study are planning to confirm their findings in patients with depression.

  1. I was really surprised to find that yogurt can have all these benefits. I feel like this could be really helpful if it truly does lead to helping depression. Do you think it could ever be an alternative to taking medication? If so, that could be a lot easier for some people. I say that because a lot of people don't like taking medications or have certain side effects from them so this could be a lot better. Especially if people normally eat yogurt then they are eating something they like and benefiting. I'm curious to see how tests turn out when they try it with humans and see if there are positive outcomes.

  2. I love yogurt! I relate to this post as I feel yogurt does have many health benefits. I'm not sure if this is true but I feel like its eating yogurt brings out a more relaxed mood in people. I've also been told by my roommate that yogurt consumption supposedly makes us more social (although the study supporting this was also done on lab rats).

  3. Probiotics are great for gut health, I take a pill daily as well as eat a ton of yogurt. It is especially important to take probiotics while on antiobiotics for infections because antibiotics kill all bacteria in the body, good or bad. I have to take antibiotics regularly so eating yogurt is incredibly helpful for me and helps keep my digestion in check.

  4. I know about probiotics and their assumed connection to better gut health, but I am a little bit skeptical about their ability to affect depression. The science here was conducted on mice. How do you tell if a mouse is in a better or worse mood? Animal physiology is close to ours, but still, certain things may function differently. I hope they can continue with human trials and find the same positive effect. That would be a game changer in the pharmacological industry.

    1. The connection between gut and mental health can be explained by something called the gut-brain connection. The brain can directly affect and trigger symptoms in our stomachs and intestines. For example, the thought of eating can actually trigger the release of the digestive fluid in our stomachs before the food reaches there. The brain is able to send signals to the gut, giving a close connection between the brain and the gastrointestinal system. Another great example showing this connection is feeling "butterflies" in your stomachs. The brain's responses to different emotion can trigger symptoms in the GI system.

  6. Like most people, I know the many different benefits that yogurt has on the gut. I eat yogurt everyday for that reason. I had no idea that it had so many other benefits. I hope that a study on yogurt can be done with humans to prove that it has the same effect on us that it does on mice. It would be really cool to see this proven true and just another reason to add to why so many people love yogurt. This was a really interesting read!

  7. I found this article extremely interesting. In m house one of the things we always buy when doing groceries are yogurts, one because they are tasty and two because they are a really healthy snack or a quick "breakfast" when I'm running late. I knew about how the probiotics help with digestion and sometimes it helps me when I have a heartburn and don't have my antacid pills. However I didn't knew it could help with depression, do you think it could become a more frequent treatment to treat depression?

    1. There has been research done on the potential health benefits and effects on helping with depression. However, probiotics are generally taken as a supplement only. There is no evidence yet showing that taking more than the recommended amount or extra dosages of probiotics has any additional benefits. Probiotics could be helpful in improving symptoms of depression but they are not effective enough to replace medication, therapy, or other treatments for depression.

  8. This is an interesting article, but it's not a new topic being discussed. There have been numerous studies with yogurt on peoples health. Researching the effects that yogurt has on depression is very interesting, though it seems that there isn't much know on how it affects it and seems like there needs to be more research done into this topic.
